BPC-157 is a lab-made peptide, which is a short chain of amino acids. Its sequence copies part of a protective protein found in human stomach fluid, called Body Protection Compound.
Researchers first described BPC-157 in the 1990s while studying a protective protein in human stomach fluid. The name is short for Body Protection Compound, and 157 refers to the specific stretch of that protein it copies.
It has since become one of the best-known recovery peptides, and clinics often group it with TB-500 and GHK-Cu. Grouping them is a convenience, not a sign that they are alike.
Almost all of the published research is in rats and mice. That work is promising, but results in animals often do not carry over to people, and large human trials have not been done.
BPC-157 is a chain of 15 amino acids taken from a longer protein that helps protect the lining of the stomach.
In animal studies, it seems to speed up two things the body already does after an injury. One is growing new blood vessels into the damaged area. The other is laying down collagen, the main fiber in tendons, ligaments, and skin.
Researchers have also looked at how it affects nitric oxide, a molecule that widens blood vessels, and at signals that turn inflammation up or down. These are the pathways behind the recovery claims you will read about.
What is missing is the human side. Because the trials have not been run, no one can say how much of this animal biology applies to a person recovering from a strain.
