What are peptides? A plain-language primer

Short chains of amino acids that act as signaling molecules—how they differ from proteins, where they come from, and how they support recovery, metabolism, and vitality.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids—the same building blocks that make up proteins. While proteins are long, complex chains, peptides are simpler structures, typically made up of 50 or fewer amino acids. Despite their size, peptides play critical roles in the body, acting as signaling molecules, hormones, and enzymes.

In the human body, peptides regulate processes ranging from growth and metabolism to healing and cognitive function. Specific peptides in our library support health optimization, healthy aging, and performance goals—see our shop for current availability.

Peptides bind to specific receptors on cells to trigger biological responses. Because their structure can mimic natural signaling molecules, peptides may offer more targeted support than traditional pharmaceuticals that affect multiple systems at once.

By origin, peptides fall into two broad groups. Some occur naturally in the body (endogenous)—for example, collagen-related peptides. Others are made in a lab (synthetic), often modeled on natural sequences, for specific therapeutic or cosmetic applications.

By role, peptides are often described in overlapping terms. Many act as messengers between cells (signaling)—growth factors are a familiar example. Some support connective tissue (structural)—collagen-related peptides fit here. In wellness settings, they are used toward targeted health goals. One peptide can fit more than one of these descriptions.
