Epithalon, also spelled epitalon, is a lab-made peptide with four amino acids. It is modeled on a natural substance from the pineal gland, the pea-sized gland that makes melatonin.
Epithalon comes out of Russian research into what those authors call bioregulators. Those are very short peptides modeled on substances taken from animal organs.
It was built from an extract of the pineal gland, the small gland that produces melatonin and helps set the body's daily clock.
Nearly all of the published work traces back to one research group over several decades. Independent laboratories in other countries have not repeated the key findings, which is the main reason to hold the results loosely.
Chromosomes end in telomeres, repeated stretches of DNA that act like the plastic tip on a shoelace. They shorten each time a cell divides, and that shortening is one marker of cellular aging.
An enzyme called telomerase can rebuild them. The central claim about epithalon is that it increases telomerase activity, and that claim comes from cell studies by its original researchers.
A second line of work involves melatonin. Because the peptide was drawn from the pineal gland, researchers looked at whether it steadies the daily sleep and wake rhythm.
